If you know someone who has been affected by unacceptable behaviours it may be hard to know what to do or how to feel. That’s okay. There are lots of ways in which you can help support those affected.
- Check for immediate danger. If they’re seriously injured or at risk, call 999 (off campus) or the Community Safety Team at +44 (0)24 7652 2222 (on campus).
- Listen without judgment. You don’t need to have all the answers—just being present, listening, and showing empathy (e.g., nodding, saying “I hear you”) can make a big difference.
- You’re not an investigator. Whether you're a friend, colleague, tutor, or manager, your role is to support—not to question or probe.
- Signpost to support. If they’re a Warwick student or staff member, encourage them to use Report and Support, the University’s confidential platform. Submitting a report doesn’t trigger a formal complaint.
- Respect their choices. Never pressure someone to report. It’s their decision.
- Share other support options. A full list of services is available here.
